Bring everything you are going to need, including food, fuel, water, and an empty black water tank, because the staff at Fort Jefferson provide NOTHING. They can't. They don't HAVE anything. Everything at Garden Key has to be hauled out by boat or seaplane, and it's too expensive to provide amenities to guests. We had been told that when the ferry was in, we could use the bar aboard the "Yankee Freedom" for drinks, snacks, and bathroom access, but that was simply not the case.
The fort provides excellent wind protection from the North and Bush Key, to the East provides some wind protection. You are open to the wind from the South and West.
Garden Key to the North, Bush and Long Keys to the East provide excellent wave protection. There are also shallows to the West and South that provide good wave protection from deep ocean swells.
Depending on the season, this anchorage can be crowded, and the channel requires close attention when entering. Large, there is room for twenty or so boats, especially if shallow draft boats stick to the shallow water to leave the deeper water for larger boats.d
In a pleasant surprise, we discovered that Starlink, although it cut out during the passage, considers the anchorage "land," so your Roam plan will work there without the expensive "Ocean" option clicked. There is no wifi or cell service.
Took two tries to set the anchor. Bottom is sand. The water and the view of the keys is gorgeous. There is some snorkeling walkable from the beach, and Loggerhead Key, with some of the best snorkeling in the Park, is a 2.5 mile dingy ride away.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

Long way to come but certainly worth the effort. Fort is historical and interesting to wander through. It's all self guided but you can join the ferry tour after it arrives around 10:30 AM. Park Rangers are around and can answer questions. Park fee is $15 a person. Honor system for paying. Cruising permit no longer in use. Great snorkeling around old piers. Swimming beach is crowded while ferry folks are here. There are two seaplane flights in morning and afternoon. Noisy for the few minutes they are taxiing in and out. Very quiet at night. Good wind protection. You can buy ice and snacks from onboard ferry while it is in. There is a small park gift shop. There is also a small museum. Take a flashlight while you tour the fort. Stairs are dark. And you'll be able to read the signs. Dogs are not permitted inside the fort but can go ashore. Leash required.

Park staff is very friendly and informative. Touring Fort Jefferson is a must. There is a very large flock of Magnificent Frigate Birds that nest on a small island next to Fort Jefferson - the only nesting site in the US. A special place in decent weather.
