We came back to Cheadle Point in the middle of October to sit out three days of bad weather with wind gusts over 30 mph. Even though the winds were coming straight down the river the anchorage remained comfortable, our anchor did not budge, and all the boats coming by were considerate of their wakes. Definitely a good place to hunker down.

We had a negative experience with inconsiderate boat traffic below the marina earlier this year but this was a pleasant surprise for us just after Labor Day in the fall of the same year. The extra three quarters of a mile farther upstream was easy, with plenty of water in the channel. The anchor set immediately. A 20+ mph storm came through in the night and we did not move. Boat traffic, which had been problematic below the marina, was uniformly respectful in the narrower waters upstream from the marina. There is room for at least four boats anchored in a line with excellent protection from wind and waves except with winds from west where there is about a mile of fetch that might kick up some chop. There is no current to speak of in the anchorage so you will lay with the wind.
Shore access for Fido appears to be possible-check with the marina. There is no shopping in the area. Cell service is adequate and we had good internet speed through our T-Mobile cellular gateway. Cheadle Point is our new favorite anchorage on the Poquoson River and would be a good choice in case of bad weather for a place to hunker down.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

We were the only boat there and it was blissfully peaceful and serene, however, we were there in mid-April. Might be a different story later in spring and summer. Only stayed 1 night, but we were able to tie up our dinghy at Legasea Marina to walk our dog. We almost tied up to the seaplane floating dock, mistaking it for the dinghy dock, but prominent signage states no tie-ups allowed without a reservation so we used the empty-ish dock right next to it. We pulled in after business hours and there was no one around to ask permission of, so we tied up to the empty-ish dock right next to the seaplane dock and left the dinghy only long enough to walk the dog. In the morning, folks at the marina were very friendly, but again, we only walked the dog and left - seems like a nice place.

Had spent the previous night at an open anchorage in Horn Harbor. Good anchorage, had 6-7 feet, centered in creek just past Dare Marina & Sea RR. Anchor held first time, came up next day with some mud but not excessive. Dare marina is available for dinghy docks, did not ask if there was a charge. It was a very windy day 6 September on Chesapeake Bay so we wanted quiet & less rocking. Locals very friendly, homeowner came by on jet ski invited us to see fireworks on another creek. Limited boat traffic, watermen & day boats but all courteous.

Good depth for deeper draft vessels. Much less boat traffic than in the wider sections of the creek.
