  • Date Reported: Sep 30, 2025
  • Reporter: Waterway Guide Staff
  • Source: USCG District 8
  • Description:

Saltwater Barrier Sill Construction - The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port New Orleans is issuing Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) Safety Measures for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' construction of a Saltwater Barrier Sill at Mississippi River Mile 63.7, AHOP. The following channel restrictions are in effect:

    1) All vessels are limited to one way traffic from Mile 63.65 to 63.91, AHOP, confined to a channel 900 ft wide. The channel follows the left descending bank and is marked on its west side by four white buoys with fixed white all-around lights. The channel buoy locations are as follows: 29-42-10.64N 089-58-43.56W, 29-42-07.53N 089-58-41.75W, 29-41-55.52N 089-58-34.63W, and 29-41-53.76N 089-58-33.65W.

    2) All vessels transiting this zone shall check-in with and take direction from the Contact Pilot onboard the M/V J.S. CHATRY 30-minutes prior to arrival on VHF-FM Channel 67 or 72.

    3) All vessels shall transit at their slowest safe speed between Miles 63.5 and 65.0, AHOP. 4) Alliance Anchorage is closed to all traffic. • These measures will remain in effect until rescinded/adjusted at a future date.

The Contact Pilot is the U.S. Coast Guard's Designated Representative. Contact Pilots are on-site 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, and can be contacted at the following: Day Shift (985) 215-9798, Night Shift (504) 756-9821.

Future draft restrictions may be required as a result of the sill's final height. The U.S. Coast Guard will coordinate closely with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide updates as soon as information becomes available. Updates will be disseminated via VTS email distribution and/or Safety Broadcast Notice to Mariners. •
