VA: Hampton Roads, work on Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel - north side
- Date Reported: Dec 13, 2020
- Reporter: Waterway Guide Staff
- Source: CG 5th District
- Description:
The construction notice for the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) expansion remains active as of April 2026, as the project has entered its final year of major marine operations.
While the sub-surface work is finishing, heavy marine construction continues with a focus on completing the new permanent bridge trestles and the interior "fit-out" of the tunnels
Current Navigation Status: April 2026
- Vessel Activity: Mariners should still expect a high concentration of crane barges, material barges, and safety vessels throughout the Hampton Roads and Willoughby Spit areas. Common tugs on-site include the Uncle Mike, Robert T, and Angelina Autumn.
- Lighting & Mooring: All barges remain lighted at night with solid white lights on the four corners. Mooring piles and floating buoys are also marked with white lights (solid for piles, flashing for buoys).
- Communication: All project vessels continue to monitor VHF channels 13 and 16. It is recommended to hail "HRBT Construction" when approaching the work zone to confirm safe passage.
Project Timeline & Milestones
- Final Year: The project is in its final phase of major marine construction, with substantial completion currently projected for late 2026 to early 2027.
- Traffic Shifts: Be aware that traffic patterns are shifting onto new bridge segments, such as the new South Trestle. This can create "distracted driver" conditions above the waterway and may involve temporary lighting changes.
For the most immediate updates or to coordinate transit near the north side (Hampton) or south side (Norfolk) work zones, you can still reach the project contacts: Shannon Gresham at 757-685-3392, Kareem Myers at 757-256-9715, or Nathan Sebura at 757-449-4652.
