Draft: 3.5'Great lock tender and ride up was uneventful. West bound departure, we saw depths of 3ft immediately following Lock 19. Sailboat was also hard grounded in area and waiting for tow. With all the Erie canal delays and closures, I am happy the canal system is open but truly sorry sailboat grounded. We have 3.5ft draft. Sailboat had 6ft draft.

WG Editor Comment:
From Waterway Guide (Great Lakes Vol. 1):
CAUTION: This area is well-known for shoaling, especially where small creeks meet the canal. When passing creek junctions, it is generally advisable to stay to the opposite side of the canal to avoid the worst shoaling. Due to this reputation, this section is also subject to frequent dredging. Watch for signs warning you of dredges up ahead. The New York Canal Corporation regularly adds supplemental daybeacons between Lock E19 and Sylvan Beach due to the temporary shoaling. Each year, the beacon locations may be different based on the dredging program process or recent storms. Locations may even vary month by month. Any supplemental buoys should be regarded as the most accurate for navigation purposes, superseding any nearby permanent daybeacons.

Draft: 6.3'CAREFUL! The channel is very shallow on the western side once you pass the lock. We got stuck in four feet of water for a while. We tried using the center, the port side and the starboard side. Luckily, Mother Nature was on our side as it was raining heavily, and we were able to plow through using our bow thruster (and my husband's incredible maneuvering.) We tried to get help from the dock master, but we were told that it was not their problem. We politely asked them to dredge this part out as soon as they got the chance so that fellow boaters would not get stuck like we did.
