Racine, WI
In the 19th century Racine emerged not only as a major manufacturing center but also a key port on Lake Michigan. Several large companies still maintain their headquarters here, continuing to contribute to the city's economy and civic life. With a population approaching 100,000, Racine offers an abundance of cultural, artistic, and entertainment opportunities for both residents and visitors alike. The historic downtown area blends thoughtfully repurposed older buildings along with several very large urban renewal projects that have added vitality to the area.
Racine's harbor has been a significant shipping port since the 1800s. About two decades ago, a multi-million dollar Lake Michigan Pathway was included in a rebuild of the harbor breakwaters. This 0.5-mile long, 25-foot wide concrete walkway provides safe access to the lakefront for both anglers and walkers. A bike path along the Racine shoreline connects with regional trails from Milwaukee to Chicago. Three miles north, accessible by bicycle or car, is Wind Point Lighthouse (4725 Lighthouse Dr.) built in 1880. It is the oldest and tallest working lighthouse on Lake Michigan. A small maritime museum located on the lighthouse grounds is open during the summer months. Many additional attractions are located downtown, within easy walking distance to the marinas. RYDE Racine transit service can get you around.
Ample provisioning options, including restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacies, and a variety of shops, are located within a mile and a half from the marinas. A lakefront farmers market is held on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (May to October) in Festival Park at 5 Fifth Street. Party on the Pavement is a street festival scheduled in September with food, music, entertainment and more.
For a complete change of pace, visit the 28-acre Racine Zoo, located right on the lakefront and featuring a variety of animal exhibits, a playground, and a miniature train.
