After 16 miles of absolutely beautiful river travel on the Pocomoke you will arrive at Pocomoke City Municipal Marina, located on both sides of the Market Street Bascule Bridge. The call that you made to Pocomoke City Hall to inform them of your intended arrival will have most probably included instructions to go through the bridge and tie up on 500+ ft. face dock on the upstream side of the bascule bridge, just before the Rt. 13 high bridge. There were four other boats tied up near the bridge so we opted to move closer to the Rt. 13 bridge to 1) be clear of the other boats, and 2) to clear ourselves from the dock area where the geese seemed to have congregated. The docks are fixed and there is, at mid tide, a 1 mph flow in either direction. Docking can be interesting in current and, with a 2 ft.+ tide, you must make sure that there is enough scope in your lines to accommodate the tidal change. We used our fender boards to good advantage to keep us of the dock pilings. The docks are old but we observed no rotten boards. We also found that we not only had running water, but also 50 amp power from an older, but still serviceable pedestal. In our conversation with the town office, they waived all fees as we were only staying two days and the town office was going to be closed on the weekend. Contrary to published data, the bridge responds to channel 68, not channel 13.
Pocomoke City is an old river port with a fascinating history that is well summarized in the Delmarva Discovery Museum, located at the foot of the bascule bridge in an old car dealership. It is definitely worth visiting. There is a revival of sorts in the downtown area and several of the near residential areas show some of the restoration work that is being done to bring old Victorian houses back to life. There are several interesting shops in the downtown area, including a local bakery, and several art stores, and remarkable vintage/estate jewelry/antiques store called "The Vault" located in an old bank in the middle of downtown. There is also a very good small museum located right in the middle of town.
Dining downtown is limited to the Waterfront Restaurant, located at the bridge, and Café Milano, located on Market Street. There is a Walmart Supercenter located about a mile from the dock on Rt. 13, the main road through town.
We were glad that we made the trip up the Pocomoke River and it is now on our list of places to re-visit.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer
