NC: Carolina Beach Inlet, Dredging

  • Date Reported: Nov 7, 2025
  • Reporter: Waterway Guide Staff
  • Source: USCG District 5
  • Description:

The Dredge CHARLESTON, along with support equipment, is performing dredging operations from November 16, 2025, until approximately December 31st, 2025, for the Coastal Storm Risk Management Carolina Beach and Vicinity Project. Dredge Operations will be conducted in the Carolina Beach Inlet. Dredged material will be pumped to beach placement areas on Carolina Beach and Kure. The Dredge Charleston will stage and anchor floating equipment and pipeline north and south of Carolina Beach Inlet outside the green side of the Intracoastal Waterway Channel. Currently, equipment is staged just south of green channel marker "155A", future equipment will also be staged north of channel marker "155." Equipment will continue to be staged here while the Dredge Charleston is on site.

All floating equipment will have flashing yellow lights, including the anchor buoys. Dredging operations will occur in and around the Carolina Beach Inlet. The dredge will be connected to a floating pipeline within the Carolina Beach Inlet channel. The dredge will deliver material to the beach fill areas via floating pipeline and steel pipe that is on the shore; there will be no submerged pipeline. The floating pipeline will be marked with flashing amber lights along the pipeline route with appropriate signs. The floating pipeline length is approximately 3500' - 4000' feet at its longest length; it will then transition from the water to steel shore pipe on the beach. The floating pipeline will be anchored and tended by tender tugboats.

Please use extreme caution navigating in and out of Carolina Beach Inlet regarding the floating pipeline. The Dredge Operator will standby on channels #13, #16, and #06 VHF-FM. For any emergencies, the dredge operator can be reached at 757-508-2326. Mariners are requested to exercise extreme caution when approaching, passing and leaving the dredging plant. Owners and lessees of fishnets, crab pots and other structures that may be in the vicinity and that may hinder the free navigation of attending vessels and equipment must remove these from the area where tugs, tender boats and other attendee equipment will be navigating. Dredging operations will be conducted 24/7. All fishnets, crab pots and structures in the general area must be removed prior to commencement of work.

A slow NO WAKE speed is requested of transiting vessels. All vessels are requested to contact the dredge prior to passing. MSI # 31672.
