NJ: Sector Delaware Bay, S 71 State Route Bridge Channel Closures

  • Date Reported: Sep 25, 2025
  • Reporter: Waterway Guide Staff
  • Source: USCG District 5
  • Description:

S 71 State Route Bridge. Mariners are advised that an engineering firm, on behalf of New Jersey Department of Transportation, will be performing maintenance on the highway drawbridge – 71 State Route (Main Street) Bridge, across Shark River, mile 0.8, between Belmar and Avon-By-The-Sea, NJ. The maintenance will be conducted from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., 7 days a week; from October 14, 2025, through March 31, 2026.

During the work hours from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., 7 days a week, from December 1, 2025, through February 28, 2026, the bridge will be maintained in the closed-to-navigation position to facilitate bridge maintenance of the bridge bascule spans. A 60-foot crane barge and a 40-foot work barge will be located in and around the vicinity of the bridge. The work barge will be located within the navigational channel which will reduce the horizontal clearance of the bridge to approximately 10 feet.

The bridge will be able to open for emergencies. Vessels should safely transit through the bridge during the closure period, during a scheduled bridge opening from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Maintenance personnel, equipment and vessels will relocate from the moveable span and navigable channel, for the scheduled bridge opening. At all other times, the drawbridge will operate in accordance with the operating regulations set out in Title 33 Code of Federal Regulations Part 117.751. The on-site work team may be contacted via VHF-FM channel 13 and 16 or cell phone at (609) 575-6835 or (609) 649-8417. Mariners should adjust their transits accordingly and use extreme caution when transiting the area.
