- Description:
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GADNR) intends to barge loaded with 20 tons of concrete at "A" Reef between October 1 and November 1, 2025. The Barge is 130' x 32' x 10'. "A" Reef is approximately 39' deep at the proposed location and has an approved clearance of –22' MLW. Material placements will not exceed this site's approved clearance.
All deployments are conducted in favorable weather conditions and during daylight hours. The proposed material deployment location is at 30.94898° Latitude, -81.24823° Longitude (30° 56.939' N, 81° 14.894' W). The Offshore Artificial Reef Program covers 111 square miles, consists of 20 offshore reefs, eight decommissioned Department of Defense Tactical Air Crew Training System Towers, and three beach reefs. This Program was established to develop long-term fisheries habitat to increase the availability of quality recreational fishing and diving sites in the Atlantic Ocean near Georgia. These artificial reefs provide habitat for both fishes and other marine life; act as attachment points for fouling and sessile organisms in search of hard substrates such as anemones, octocorals, sponges, algae, and others; and provide habitat for organisms to forage, shelter, and evade predators.
