NC: Alligator River, Alligator River Bridge, Alternative Route

    All mariners be advised the NCDOT is driving piles for construction of the new Alligator River Bridge (AIWW MM 84.2) from October 01 through November 14, 2025, that will require closure of the main channel approximately 250 yards NNE of the existing bridge. To ensure the safety of the operation and reduce impacts on transiting vessels the following deviations will be in place: Vessels less than 150 feet in length overall:

    • NCDOT and the USCG have established an alternative route around construction activities between bents (piles) 53 and 54.
    • Bent 53 is marked with a red triangle dayboard with red quick flash light and bent 54 with a green square dayboard with green quick flash light.
    • Approximate horizontal distance between dayboards is 50 yards.
    • Recent USACE survey indicates depths of 11 feet MLLW.
    • Route is available 24 hours per day.
    • Vessels are advised to exercise extreme caution while transiting and operate at minimum safe speed.
    • Vessels must not transit between the crane barge and the yellow anchor buoys.
    Vessels 150 feet in length overall and greater:
    • Vessels may transit the main navigation channel between bents (piles) 50 and 51 provided the project or bridge tender are contacted via phone at (252) 796-7261 or VHF FM channel 13 or 16 at least 12 hours prior to transiting through the area.
    • The project manager or bridge tender will provide guidance for these vessels to help them navigate the main navigation channel and avoid construction activities as aids to navigation in the area will be misleading as indicated in diagram above. 
    • Vessels must not transit between the crane barge and the yellow anchor buoys. Emergency vessels:
    • Main navigation channel transit for emergency vessels may be accommodated with at least a 4-hour advance notice.
    • Emergency vessels will be given verbal instructions via VHF FM channel 13 or 16 to navigate around the pile driving crane barge and anchor lines.
    • Vessels must not transit between the crane barge and the yellow anchor buoys.

    Severe weather: 

    The pile driving crane barge and anchor lines will be removed from the channel 48 hours prior to the arrival of tropical storm force winds. For guidance on specific
