NC: Onslow Beach Swing Bridge, MM 240.7 AICW, Demolition Activities

  • Date Reported: Jul 31, 2025
  • Reporter: Waterway Guide Staff
  • Source: USCG District 5
  • Description:

Mariners are advised that the Onslow Beach Swing Bridge, located across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW) at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, will be undergoing demolition activities from July 1, 2025, through November 30, 2025. The demolition includes removal of the bridge's superstructure, substructure, and fender system. To facilitate safe removal operations, the navigational channel will be impacted Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., excluding federal holidays. During this period, the following temporary restrictions will be in place: • From July 1, 2025, through July 31, 2025, the existing swing span will be maintained in the closed-to-navigation position during working hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The bridge will be made available for navigation and maintained in the open-to-navigation position between 12 noon and 1 p.m. and outside of working hours. • From August 1, 2025, through November 30, 2025, during working hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., a crane barge will be stationed in the navigational channel reducing the horizontal clearance of the bridge to approximately 28 feet. Vessels not able to safely pass through the bridge with the crane barge stationed in the navigational channel should transit the area outside of working hours or between 12 noon and 1 p.m. Vessels able to safely pass through the bridge with the crane barge stationed in the navigational channel may do so at any time. Short-term closures (four hours or less) may be necessary to support specific demolition tasks. Short term closures will be announced via updated local notice to mariners, broadcast notice to mariners and/or marine safety information bulletins. During forecasted severe weather, the bridge will open normally from the time the COTP sets Port Condition Whiskey until winds exceed NCDOT bridge opening limitations. Vessels that cannot adjust their schedule may be allowed to transit during working hours by providing 24 hours' advance notice to the Site Supervisor at (910) 520-1319. The bridge and work barges may be contacted on VHF-FM channel 13. There will be no work or restrictions on the following federal holidays: • Friday, July 4, 2025 • Monday, September 1, 2025 • Monday, October 13, 2025 • Tuesday, November 11, 2025 • Thursday and Friday, November 27–28, 2025 All marine equipment used for the project will be properly marked and lit in accordance with 33 CFR 83.30. Equipment will be moored outside the navigation channel when not in use. No equipment will remain in the channel after working hours. Mariners should adjust their transit plans accordingly and exercise caution when transiting the area.
