Now is the Time to Visit

Belfast, ME

Belfast, Maine should be on your list of places to visit. And don’t let winter discourage you. It may just be the best time of year. Community leadership and focusing on what makes Belfast great are evident in this latest Waterway Guide Preferred Destination

Whether you spend the summer sailing in Belfast Harbor, along the Maine coast, or just plan to visit the town, Front Street Shipyard is worth a stop. Belfast is at the north end of Penobscot Bay at the mouth of the short Passagassawakeag River in a comfortably navigated harbor. Moorings await and there are some quiet spots to drop an anchor if that’s your fancy.

An Enchanted Coast

A prominent resource on the east coast for sophisticated boat building and refit projects, renovations and maintenance are the specialty. Front Street Shipyard provides a 485-ton lifting capacity, deep-water access, and a marina for visiting vessels. Bringing new life to the town of Belfast, Front Street is a respected addition to the community and is always eager to meet talented shipwrights, craftsmen and specialists. Belfast Marina and Belfast City Landing round out the waterfront options for visiting boaters.

For the past 40-plus years the local farmers’ markets have offered the best of Waldo County’s fresh and locally grown bounty. The markets are open year 'round, every week, indoors or out. Hoop houses and greenhouses keep the turnips, beets, carrots and vegetables coming alongside baked specialties and local offerings. United Farmers Market of Maine and Belfast Farmers’ Market both demand a visit.

If you’re looking for the best beer in town it’s got to be Marshall Wharf Brewing Company where the Beer Garden also offers small bites and seafood. Check out the Sail Pumper Sour Brown Ale with cherries. Marshall also offers a full slate of events and top-notch talent.

Get a Long Little Doggie

500 Dachshunds descend on the city for Maine Weinerfest each September. When the long dogs complete their show and you want more adventures you’re only a short drive from Acadia National Park or Boothbay Harbor using Belfast’s small-town ambience, restaurants and galleries as home base.

Scots-Irish families from Londonderry, New Hampshire settled Belfast, ME in 1770 and legend has it that the town’s name was chosen by a coin toss. Today’s successful reimagining of the city is due in large part to a devoted group of visionaries who focus on quality of life for visitors and residents alike. Art galleries, shops, festivals and autumn leaves in their auburn late September splendor show off the city’s charming evolution.

The region’s maritime history is presented at local museums. For a good stretch of the legs discover the history of Belfast with Museum in the Streets. Or take the Belfast Rail Trail along the ‘Passy’ river for a walk back in time.

Winter Could be the Best

Speak with Belfast’s champions and you will discover that community spirit is the reason that everyone stays warm and active in winter. The streets don’t roll up when the cool weather arrives. So much so that the season is celebrated with the Belfast Ice Festival.

An attractive waterfront, a world-class shipyard, community marina and mooring field combine with one of the coolest small towns in America to make this a true Waterway Guide Preferred Destination.
