Autumn is the perfect season to explore Camden County, North Carolina – a hidden gem in the northeastern part of the state and a short drive from the Outer Banks. Whether paddling the historic and amber colored waters of the Dismal Swamp Canal or hiking one of the many scenic trails, you’ll be surrounded by cooler temperatures and a vibrant fall canopy of red, orange and golden foliage.

With miles of shoreline, wild swamps and beautiful parks- Camden County is the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Cast a line with Albemarle Fishing Charters along the Pasquotank and North Rivers or enjoy a leisurely nature walk and waterfront picnic at Treasure Point Park.

Located at Mile Marker 28, the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center – part of the NCDOT Rest Area on US Highway 17- offers a peaceful and friendly location to dock overnight in the swamp. As the only visitor center in the US welcoming travelers by highway and waterway, the Dismal Swamp Welcome Center provides travel and tourism information for North Carolina. Boaters enjoy access to rest area facilities, free wi-fi, and gift shop. Adjacent to the rest area and canal sits the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail, a 3 miles paved trail perfect for hiking, biking, birding and nature watching.

The Dismal Swamp State Park is the largest remaining swamp in the southeastern U.S and home to more than twenty miles of scenic trails. Have your camera ready to capture sightings of black bear, white tailed deer, and river otters meandering along the trails or canal bank. Birders delight in viewing multiple species including the Swainson’s Warbler, Pileated Woodpecker, and Great Blue Heron. Rent a kayak and paddle the mirrored waters of the Dismal Swamp Canal, the oldest man-made waterway in the country, and an alternate route of the Intracoastal Waterway.

As you cruise south along the canal, make a pit stop at Lamb’s Marina just a couple miles north of Elizabeth City. Family owned and operated, Lamb’s offers a serene and well-protected marina available for transient or long-term dockage. Fuel, lounge area, restrooms, showers, electric hookups and more are available.

History is around every corner in Camden, from moonshining to freedom seekers. Discover the people, places and stories of the area at the Camden County Heritage Museum and Historic Jail. Explore unique artifacts, exhibits, military uniforms and a vibrant new mural celebrating 250 years of Camden history. Historic markers on the Civil War and National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom offer further glimpses into the past.
